Scotch whisky industry operations update
A recent SWA survey, conducted between 9-15th April, has thrown more light on what is happening in the Scotch whisky industry.
The survey had responses from 95% of SWA members, but it should be noted that this survey is already more than a week out of date and further changes will have taken place.
The results reveal that there continues to be significant disruption to normal industry operations, across distilling, blending and bottling operations. Key facts are these:
- 36% of the industry’s workforce who would usually be working at Scotch whisky sites are currently working there – the balance are either working from home or have been furloughed.
- 87% of all Scotch Whisky industry sites have either been closed or are operating at reduced capacity.
- 77% of distilleries are operating at reduced capacity or have been temporarily closed.
- 100% of Scotch Whisky producers are complying with Scottish Government and Food Standards Scotland guidance on business operations and 100% of them have implemented rigorous social distancing measures at their workplaces.
The impact these closures may have on industry stock levels will not be measurable in the near term but we will keep you informed of any further news on this important subject.
