Whisky indexes: WhiskyInvestDirect Grain Index (WIDGI) and Malt Index (WIDMI)
There is no single industry benchmark for wholesale pricing of whisky. This can make it hard to assess the value of whisky and difficult to see how whisky is performing as an asset class.
Using data from its live markets combined with data from the whisky industry, WhiskyInvestDirect calculates a whisky price index for grain whisky and for malt whisky separately. The whisky indexes are expressed as the price of a notional, constantly 4‑year-old whisky. Using these, it is possible for WhiskyInvestDirect to determine benchmark prices for whiskies of other ages.
Note: even if this index of 4-year-old whisky prices decreases, it does not follow that the value of your whisky in the cask is also falling. Your whisky is growing older in the cask whereas the whisky index estimates the average price of whiskies sold at 4 years old.
Daily average WhiskyInvestDirect Grain Index (WIDGI)
WIDGI (price per LPA of a notional grain whisky, constantly 4 years old) = £1.799
(as of 4th March 2021)
Daily average WhiskyInvestDirect Malt Index (WIDMI)
WIDMI (price per LPA of a notional malt whisky, constantly 4 years old) = £4.318
(as of 4th March2021)
