UK & India Trade Deal Announced
- In 2024, India was Scotch whisky's biggest market by volume, exporting over 53 million litres.
- This equates to £248 million, a 140% increase since 2020.
- Historically, Scotch whisky has represented only 2-3% of total whisky sold in India, leaving considerable room for growth.
Scotch whisky has been the drink of choice for many Indians for more than a hundred years. This tariff reduction will create a huge new market for Scotch whisky amongst the Indian population. Scotch whisky brands will see this as an extremely exciting new opportunity. India is already the largest market, by volume, for Scotch whisky.
We are delighted that a trade deal, encompassing Scotch whisky, has been done with India. While it has taken many years to achieve, the results should be more immediate for the many existing Scotch whisky drinkers in India who will benefit from more affordable pricing.
Perhaps equally importantly, the lower tariff will attract more consumers into the already fast-growing Scotch whisky category. Scotch is rated as the most aspirational spirit in India and now it will be within reach of a huge number of new consumers.
